How do you disinfect leather purses?

March 31, 2010 | In: purses handbags

I just bought 2 leather purses on ebay and want to disinfect them. When we put our purses down in restaurants and such they can pick up staph and other nasty germs.

I don’t want to ruin the leather…I’m thinking saddle soap, Murphy’s, vinegar, baking soda…anyone know this? Thanks.

To be honest it’s not really worth it sterilizing would be near impossible any way without a clinical environment. However, you should be able to clean them up with a leather cleaner.Consider the germs on money which is handled far more than your purse will have been. When I worked on an infectious diseases ward the consultant there said that the germs on money was nothing to worry about and obviously couldn’t be avoided – so I reckon the germs in your purse won’t do much harm either.

Just use some of those kitchen and bathroom wipes..They are mild and I doubt they would do any damage…Try them on an old belt or something first if your uncertain.. I would say they would be ok to use ..

No baking soda, god no on the baking soda. Murphy’s really won’t disinfect. I would actually use a lightly damp (very little water) with a little bit of saddle soap.

I second the bathroom wipes, just stay away from the Clorox.
